Love

The Dance of Love
begins with the heart quickening
in anticipation of finding just the right partner
maybe having to go through a few before the One is chosen
Then starts that long, slow, salty, sultry Tango
(with the lights turned low)
lost in the heady fragrance of desire and passion
fueled by the possibilities and the dreams
in tune to each other's inner rhythms and beats
pulsating-
you don't want this dance to end

The romantic Waltz takes shape
as you move elegantly and gracefully as one
twisting and spinning
gathering momentum with each turn
as you guide and glide
enjoying the turns and pivots
as you are led through Life's dance floor
in sweeping movements;
held close and cherished~
languishing each step
gazing into each other's eyes longingly
with an intensity yet gentleness
that this Dance demands-
knowing that if you stumble
your partner is there
to get you back on track

Faster the Waltz moves
until it turns into the Quick Step
stacattoing through
in short quick bursts
as the pace picks up-
an almost exhausting pace
sometimes leaving one partner
struggling to keep up
being pulled along,
sometimes out of sync
and out of touch

Abruptly the Box step begins clumsily,
but still together
hard to tell who is leading- and who is following
going through the motions
holding on to and looking (but not looking) at your partner
as well as out beyond them
you dance the well- worn steps-
you are practically coasting through
mundanely ordinary-eyes open or eyes closed
it doesn't matter.
you feel boxed in by the predictable steps
and sometimes you are not even aware of the missed steps
and the tripping and fumbling
to get back in step together.
but in this dance
it's up to you to get back in sync
or not~
Whether by choice
or by Fate
you begin to wonder if dancing solo
is a better option
or is it time
to go in search of a new partner?

The prompt this week at OSI is Love. Please stop by and see the other poems by the very talented writers. Hope you have a wonderful week!

Hi Patti,

That is brilliant.. staying on, practicing perseverance, practicing happiness, and not bothering about tripping and fumbling..always expecting sync to happen..moving on.. living and loving.. Thanks Patti, you inspired the flow..

Love is the fabric of our lives. If there is no love... How sad to live a whole life without love, but partner hopping is not the answer to love. This poem makes you stop and think.

This IS brilliant!!!! Also, I can tell that Dancing with the Stars has been on recently with all of the different types of dances.

Your writing is something else and this poem really sums up a lot of living!!!

Wow...Pattiiiii...this is so amazing, you just did a wonderful job in it!

I wonder if you've taken those dance steps lately, and if so, I'd say, it's a romantic waltz you've had...:)

Loved it really!

Very clever using the different dances to illustrate the love progression from sultry tangoes to quicksteps.Solo?..nah..too exposed..all your mistakes are too detectable!
